BIRD SURVEYS AND MONITORING

least Bell’s vireo banded nestlings

California gnatcatcher nestlings

GWB performs protocol surveys for the federally endangered least Bell’s vireo, southwestern willow flycatcher, California gnatcatcher, light-footed clapper rail, and Yuma clapper rail. Such surveys are usually mandated by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, various state Fish & Game departments, or other regulatory agency as part of permit conditions or requirements. In addition to protocol surveys and long-term population monitoring, banding, and reproductive success studies for these FE species, GWB performs baseline biological surveys, focused ornithological surveys, monitoring and breeding studies for all other avian species in southwestern willow woodland, coastal sage, littoral, and other riparian and upland habitats throughout the Southwest.

Following are the basic endangered species protocol survey requirements (additional specific survey requirements and restrictions for each species also apply):

Least Bell’s Vireo 8 surveys at least 10 days apart from 10 April - 31 July

California gnatcatcher 6 surveys at least 7 days apart from 15 March - 30 June

Southwestern Willow Flycatcher 5 surveys at least 5 days apart; 1 from 15-31 May, 1 from 1-21 June, and 3 from 22 June - 17 July

Light-footed Clapper Rail 3 surveys from 15 April - 15 May

Yuma Clapper Rail 3 surveys from 15 April - 15 May
